For the third straight year, Americans are showing a distinct preference for red wine over white.
Impact Databank, an industry research publication, has projected that red wine consumption grew by 3 percent in the U.S. in 2008 to, get a load of this, 121 million cases. I did the math on this, and that many 12-bottle cases of red wine translates to about 574,000,000 glasses of wine! That may seem like a lot of wine, but now add total white wine volume of 118 million cases and rose/pink wines on top of that -- To paraphrase the old senator from Illinois, Everett Dirksen, "A billion (glasses) here and a billion (glasses) there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money."
It's hard to imagine consumption of a billion glasses of wine, but that's just what Americans did last year. The preference for red wine may seem slight, but white wine held the edge for 30 years until 2006. The leading red wine is Cabernet by far, but Pinot Noir is still growing in popularity. Red wine really started to catch up on white in the late 90s, when reports on the health benefits of (red) wine were published in the media. And, if you like red wine, we often say get the biggest, most reddest wine you can, Petite Sirah! Give one of our August Briggs Petite Sirahs (or Cab, Pinot, or Zin too) a try.
